PORTSMOUTH — Three-year-old James Santerre just had to have that hose to show off his firefighting skills

And he did, pulling the hose — and firefighter Andrew Jones — up, down and all over. If it had been the real thing, no doubt that fire would have been extinguished in no time.

James was just one of many children who toured the fire station during an open house on Sunday. Families were treated to a tour of all the vehicles and equipment as they enjoyed refreshments along with free toy helmets and stickers.

More importantly, the department shared valuable fire safety and prevention information with some of Portsmouth’s youngest residents.

“This is the third year in a row we’ve done this,” said Fire Chief Michael Cranson. “It’s just an opportunity to invite the public in, answer any questions that may have, and sort of show off our equipment. The biggest thing is to go over some prevention stuff with the kids and to try and make the kids feel unafraid of us so that if we do have to show up at somebody’s home that they’re not terrified.”

Firefighter Jones, who does much of the educational outreach for the department, demonstrated how he suits up before a fire — “We have to get dressed in one minute,” he told the kids — and shared tips on what children should do in the event of a fire.

After that, he helped all the kids in trying their hand at manning a hose behind the station.
