A long-standing part of old Water Street came to an end Saturday afternoon, when workers took down the old Mercier’s Hardware sign from the closed business.

Mercier’s, which opened 90 years ago, closed last year after Gary Wagenbach and his wife Paula realized the store was no longer financially viable in this age of big box stores, the Internet, and changing consumer habits. Prescott Cronin helped Mr. Wagenbach take down the sign for the last time.
