EAST PROVIDENCE — Anne Rogers of Rumford, a sixth grade student at St. Margaret School, is the 2013 State of Rhode Island winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.
Her essay is a response to the theme, “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.” Her selection was announced recently at a VFW awards banquet held at the Kelly-Gazzerro Post No. 2812 in Cranston, where she presented her entry to the group of veterans and ladies auxiliary members.
She was previously named the Dusza-Almeida Post winner and District 1 winner. Anne’s essay is now entered in the national competition. Anne is the daughter of Michael and Christine Rogers.
The annual VFW Patriot’s Pen competition provides 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students the opportunity to express their opinion on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills while they compete for worthwhile awards and prizes. Awards are given at the local, district, and state levels. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards at the national level. The first place national winner receives a $5,000 award and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C.
