SMITHFIELD — Christiano Tré Barbosa, Jr., a 2013 East Providence High School graduate, died as a result of a single-car accident early Thursday morning, Oct. 24, on the Bryant University campus.
Mr. Barbosa was one of five Bryant students in the vehicle at the time it careened into a tree on Physical Road at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, according Smithfield Police, which as of mid-afternoon Oct. 24 would still not release the victim’s name.
Bryant University did confirm the tragedy with a tweet on its Twitter feed at about 1:30 p.m., “Bryant community today mourns the death of Christiano Barbosa, Class of 2017. Our kindest thoughts go to Christiano’s family and friends.”
Mr. Barbosa was the most seriously injured of the young people. He was air-lifted to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead from the injuries he suffered. According to reports, the four other students were treated for various injuries and each was released.
Updated, 5:30 p.m., Oct. 24: Late Thursday, Smithfield Police released more detail on the accident. Mr. Barbosa was one of three passengers in the rear of a late model Volkswagen involved in the crash, none of whom was wearing a seat belt.
Police said a field sobriety test was performed on the driver of the car. He passed. All five young people involved were men. Police said the driver told them he lost control of the vehicle after he dropped something in the cabin. The right side of the car, gray/silver in color, struck the tree on what was called a dimly lighted road.
No charges have been filed. Smithfield police continue to investigate the incident.
