KINGSTON — The East Providence High School girls’ volleyball team avenged a pair of losses to Prout during the regular season, defeating the Crusaders by a 3-1 score Wednesday night, Nov. 7, in the Division I State Tournament semifinals played at University of Rhode Island’s Keaney Gymnasium.

EPHS senior Lindsee Allienello had nine kills for the Townies in the state tourney semifinal victory over Prout, Nov. 7.

The Townies, seeded second from the I-North ranks, won by the scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22. They move on to face I-North second seed Coventry for the title Saturday afternoon, Nov. 10, at 5 o’clock back at Keaney. The reigning champion Knotty Oakers needed five games to defeat I-North top seed Mount St. Charles in the first semi match Wednesday.

East Providence was swept by Prout, seeded first in the state tourney from I-South, in the regular-season league meeting of the teams in Wakefield back in September. The two sides also met up in the mid-season Koch Eye Tournament where the Crusaders once again topped the locals.

Wednesday, in his notes on the match, EPHS head coach Alex Butler noted the contest “wasn’t pretty” and that “the volleyball was actually pretty ugly, but the Townies came out on top and that’s all that matters.” According to Butler, both teams had numerous serving and hitting errors and neither could find a consistent rhythm.

E.P. seniors Lindsee Allienello and Nicole Strik picked the best time to have season highs in kills with 9 and 8, respectively. Libero Lucianna Medici was steady in the back row and pass consistently. Setter Izzy Newton had 28 assists.

The Townies found success against Coventry already this fall. East Providence stopped the Oakers’ long winning streak, handing them their first loss of the 2012 season by a 3-1 count in city on Oct. 3.

Coach Butler urged the local faithful to “forget about the live stream coverage and get down to URI to support your Townies!”
