East Providence Police take Central Avenue shooting suspects into custody

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police officers arrested two suspects in connection to Sunday morning’s shooting at the Central Avenue playground, which left one victim hospitalized.

East Providence Police Captain of Detectives John Sequeira confirmed the department’s SRT Team (Special Reaction Team) and other officers apprehended the suspects in a “coordinated effort” some time late Sunday/early Monday morning, roughly 12 hours after the incident occurred on Sept. 29 at the Onna Moniz John-Central Avenue Park.

Capt. Sequeira said the investigation remains on going. The EPPD will not release the names of the suspects or the charges they face until the alleged perpetrators are arraigned, which is expected to take place Monday, Sept. 30.

The suspects, who fled the scene on foot, were apprehended in city. Captain Sequeira confirmed the victim, a 20-ish African American male, was shot once. He also said the victim was shot in the park then placed into a car by friends attempting to get him medical attention. The victim was not shot in the car, Capt. Sequeira reiterated, as has been erroneously reported by some media outlets.

EPPD investigators have recovered evidence, the captain continued. They’re also seeking out any other possible suspects. “The case is still evolving,” Capt. Sequeira added.

EPPD Major Christopher Parella is expected to handle the release of more information on the case later Monday. In a brief text message exchange Monday morning, Major Parella quickly noted, “We did some real good work on this (case).”
