EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Police Department has released the names of a man and woman involved in a domestic dispute that turned overtly violent last week, leaving one person involved in custody and the other in the hospital.
Michael Wayne Stewart, 49, of 36 Pembroke Ave., Providence, was charged with two domestic counts for his alleged role in the incident, which took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 17, on Tenth Street in city.
Tracy Smith, 44, of 25 Tenth St., was allegedly stabbed in the leg by Mr. Stewart following the incident. She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At approximately 4:23 p.m. on July 17, police responded to the scene to find Mr. Stewart, at some point considered to be Ms. Smith’s boyfriend, had supposedly forcibly entered her Tenth Street residence and stabbed her.
According to police, the suspect was taken into custody shortly after the altercation took place when a vehicle matching a description of his car given to authorities by a neighbor of the victim was seen by an EPPD patrol on Bullocks Point Avenue a few miles south in Riverside. Police found the weapon used in the alleged when he was taken into custody.
In the report on the matter, Mr. Stewart told police he was attempting to return several items belonging to Ms. Smith at the time of the incident. He said he was asked to return to the Tenth Street residence, but then felt threatened when one of Ms. Smith’s “homies” was there with her. The situation spiraled out of control at that point.
According to the report, the couple were involved in argument earlier in the day when Ms. Smith allegedly used a kitchen knife to stab Mr. Stewart in the knee and hand after he allegedly punched and kicked her. Mr. Stewart then left Ms. Smith’s apartment but returned and is alleged to have used a knife to stab her three times before leaving when he spotted witnesses to the incident.
The suspect was treated for his injuries at Rhode Island Hospital then was held at the East Providence Police Headquarters overnight. He was later arraigned on charges of Domestic Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Domestic Breaking and Entering. Ms. Smith was treated for stab wounds to the leg at Rhode Island Hospital. She was not charged in the incident.Add to favorites
