EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police Department officers recently took two men into custody, both of whom are alleged to have robbed a Providence convenience store of cigarettes then attempted to sell the ill-gotten goods in city.

According to EPPD Detective Captain Richard Frazier, Anthony DiChristofaro, 42, and Robert Rigollet, 37, were detained in East Providence and eventually turned over to Providence Police after both were spotted on video taken by surveillance cameras while apparently stealing packs of cigarettes from the Sunrise Market on Smith Street in the capital city at 4 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Some six hours later, East Providence Police were informed of two men attempting to sell individual cigarette packs to clerks at the Buckets General Store on Bullocks Point Avenue in city.

The clerks declined the offer, but became suspicious, according to Capt. Frazier. They called the EPPD with a license plate number and description of the vehicle the men were driving. Minutes later, an EPPD officer stopped the car on Carousel Drive. Mr. DiChristofaro, whose last known address was Elmwood Avenue in Warwick, was eventually charged with operating a vehicle without a license.

The men were both taken into custody, where a background check for recently area larcenies was done. At that time, according to Capt. Frazier, the Sunrise Market incident was discovered.

EPPD investigators later spotted two men on the store video stealing cigarettes. Mr. DiChristofaro and Mr. Rigollet, whose last known address was Pleasant Street in West Warwick, were identified on the tape by the officers.

Both men were also found to have lengthy criminal records, Capt. Frazier said, and both were parole violators. After being turned over to the PPD, both men were charged with breaking & entering/larceny and were transported to the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston.

“All of our guys did a really good job from the get-go,” Capt. Frazier said of the work done on the case by the EPPD.
