EAST PROVIDENCE — Drinking and driving don’t mix, especially for a young city resident who drove her car into both a tree and a fence on a Willett Avenue property in the wee hours of May 17.
Veronica Smith, 20, of 44 Oak Crest Drive, Riverside, was arrested by East Providence Police and charged with four violations following the incident which took place at approximately 1:42 a.m.
Ms. Smith was charged with Driving Under the Influence, first offense; Refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test; Refusal to submit to a chemical test; and Failure to maintain control of her vehicle.
Once in custody, Ms. Smith explained she had imbibed three “shots” of an alcoholic beverage, two “12-ounce” beers, and one “mixed” drink over a period of some three-and-a-half hours between roughly 9 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 10 establishment on Willett Avenue.
Ms. Smith apparently lost control of her vehicle upon leaving the establishment. The witness to the incident, a person residing at another Willett Avenue location about 100 yards or so to the south of the Legion Hall, said she heard a loud noise coming from the front of her home then saw the vehicle later identified as that of Ms. Smith had crashed through a fence at the border of the property. No one was injured in the incident.
Ms. Smith is also alleged to have been involved in a similar incident that same evening by Barrington Police, who received a call of a car striking a tree in that town and leaving the scene.
