EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police Saturday, Nov. 16, released more details on the tragic accident Friday night, Nov. 15, in the Riverside section of the city that left a middle-aged woman dead after being hit by a motor vehicle.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday on Bullocks Point Avenue, between Willett and Pawtucket Avenues, when the female victim ran into oncoming traffic, was struck by a 2003 Nissan Altima and killed.
The pedestrian was identified as Laurie Rozen, 53, of 25 Bullocks Point Ave. She lived in the Stonegate apartment complex.
When officers arrived on scene they confirmed that the crash did involve one vehicle and a pedestrian. The female pedestrian was located in the lane of travel on Bullocks Point Avenue and was unresponsive, at which point first responding officers immediately began first aid. East Providence Rescue personnel arrived shortly after and immediately took over medical treatment and transported the pedestrian to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The operator of the striking vehicle, a 39-year-old female, also from East Providence had been traveling north on Bullocks Point Avenue in the left lane when she suddenly saw Ms. Rozen standing in her lane of travel, possibly attempting to cross the road, at which point the collision occurred. There were two small children in the vehicle at the time of collision, but no one other than Ms. Rozen was injured.
Speed does not appear to be a factor and the operator of the striking vehicle is not facing charges at this time. The investigation is still ongoing, according to EPPD Lieutenant Raymond Blinn, who added lighting and time of night may have been contributing factors to the accident.
Traffic Division Sergeant Bruce Atwell leads the investigation, which included the EPPD Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
