East Providence Police identify corpse found in Narragansett Bay

EAST PROVIDENCE — The identity of the male body discovered in the waters of Narragansett Bay by a walker on the East Bay Bike Path last weekend has been released the East Providence Police Department.

Thomas Sullivan, 46 and of Providence, was found deceased in the bay by a pedestrian on the path early Sunday morning, Dec. 9, according to EPPD Detective Captain Richard Frazier.

Mr. Sullivan had been reported missing to the Rhode Island State Police a month to the day, Nov. 9, upon the discovery of his body. Capt. Frazier said his disappearance was being investigated as a potential suicide.

Mr. Sullivan is believed to have leaped to his death off the I-Way, Interstate 195 bridge. A combination of the impact of hitting the water and drowning are considered to be the official causes of death.

Capt. Frazier said since the I-Way Bridge opened in recent years, suicide attempts have been infrequent. Mr. Sullivan’s body remained in the water for a month and happened to wash up in city due simply to the tides and currents.
