East Providence Police conduct recruitment drive

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Police Department is currently in the midst of a recruitment drive, which runs through Tuesday, Feb. 26. The drive is the first conducted by the EPPD since 2010.

According to EPPD guidelines, prospective candidates must be able to “perform general police work protecting life and property, enforce criminal and traffic laws and local ordinances, conduct investigations and perform related work as required.”

Of prospects, Lieutenant James Nelson said, “We’re looking for well-rounded people, people who are professional and dedicated to being part of the East Providence Police Department.”

Lt. Nelson directs the EPPD Planning and Training Division. He’ll oversee the application process with the city Human Resources Department.

Prospective candidates must fill out a number of forms to participate in the testing process including a Preliminary Application Form, an Agility Test Medical Release Form, which must be signed by a physician who has examined the prospect within the last six months, and a notarized Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement. The Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement can also be signed in the presence of a police department employee responsible for accepting applications.

  • In addition to applications and release forms, applicants must provide legible copies of the following documents (note: each will be retained by the East Providence Human Resources Department for future reference):
  • Completed Preliminary Application Form
  • Birth Certificate or Naturalization Papers
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License
  • And one or more of the following: Proof of two years of Active Duty Military Service (Copy of DD-214) or Proof of four years of Reserve or National Guard Service; Certification From Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy (As a Municipal Police Officer); Proof of three years of Satisfactory Employment as a Correctional Officer; College Transcript (must be an original official document) with conferral of Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of 60 or more credit hours, with major in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice

The agility test is scheduled for Saturday, March 2, in Rhode Island College’s athletic field house in Providence at 1 p.m.  Lt. Nelson said those who pass the agility test will be notified shortly of the date for a written exam, which is expected to take place some time later in March or April. He said the process would continue on from that point. If an applicant is hired, he or she would later attend the Municipal Policy Academy housed at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Lincoln campus and starting in July.

Candidates proceeding to the written examination will be required to tender a non-refundable $30 application fee via check or money order only made payable to the City of East Providence.

Completed packages must be submitted to the East Providence Police Department by no later than 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted for this recruitment drive.

With the recent retirement of Major Charles Swenson and with other staff reaching retirement eligibility, the EPPD is seeking individuals to enter the system.
“We’re looking to rebuild our hiring list, but we do have some openings that we’re looking to fill,” said Lt. Nelson.

One last important note, per city ordinance, potential EPPD candidates must live in Rhode Island or if outside the state within 10 miles of City Hall.
