East Providence man arrested on DUI charge with toddler in car

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island State Police arrested two East Providence men on Saturday morning, June 7, at 12:45 a.m., one on a drunk driving charge and another on an outstanding warrant after conducting a motor vehicle stop on Plainfield Street in the Providence. The stop was the result of traffic violations.

After troopers pulled the vehicle over they identified the operator as Robert Lewis, 35, of 99 Walnut St.. While interacting with Mr. Lewis, Troopers observed various indicators consistent with intoxication. Mr. Lewis’ six-year-old son was properly restrained in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Mr. Lewis failed a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests at the scene. He was placed under arrest and transported to the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks where he submitted to a Breath Test. The test resulted in blood alcohol content readings of .185% and .180%.

Mr. Lewis was charged with Driving Under the Influence of liquor and /or drugs with a blood alcohol content greater than 0.15%. Mr. Lewis was issued a summons for the following traffic violations: 1.) Intervals Between Vehicles, 2.) No Seatbelt (Operator), 3.) No Seatbelt (Passenger), 4.) Presence of Alcoholic Beverages While Operating or Riding in a Motor Vehicle.

Mr. Lewis was held overnight and appeared before a Justice of the Peace in the morning at which time he was released on personal recognizance pending future Sixth Division District Court dates.

Mr. Lewis’ son was transported to the Lincoln Woods Barracks and released to a family member. The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families was notified of the incident.

A passenger in the vehicle, Jeremy Cavaco, 33, of 145 Summit St., East Providence, was arrested on a Sixth Division District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear for Ability to Pay on a charge of Driving with a Suspended License originating out of the East Providence Police Department.

He was held overnight, and appeared before a Justice of The Peace in the morning at which time he posted bail and was released.
