East Providence High girls’ cagers win, edge closer to playoff berth

CENTRAL FALLS — The East Providence High School girls’ basketball team cruised to a 47-27 victory over host Central Falls Monday night, Feb. 18, in a Division II contest, edging closer to securing a berth in the upcoming league championship playoffs.

The Townies raced to a commanding 18-0 lead to start the game and were never challenged the rest of the way. E.P. improved its II-East mark to 7-7 with the victory. Jailyn Kilgore and Erica Dias scored 8 and 7 points, respectively, to lead the locals.

East Providence continues a very busy week to close out its regular season schedule, playing the second of four games in five days Tuesday night, Feb. 19, in Newport against unbeaten and II-East leading Rogers.

Tuesday’s meeting is the second between the Townies and Vikings, the latter taking a 50-47 win when the sides played in East Providence earlier this winter. Game time is 7 p.m.

East Providence returns home for its final two regular season games, including its D-II finale Thursday night, Feb. 21, against a Tiverton team it currently shares second place with in II-East. The Tigers enter a Tuesday night game against 5-9 Mt. Hope with the same 7-7 mark as the Townies.

E.P. then concludes its regular slate Friday, Feb. 22, against Classical in a non-league outing. The game is notable for several reasons, including it being the Townies’ Senior Night. In addition, it’s E.P.’s annual “Pack the House Pink” game in support of breast cancer awareness. As well, the Townies and Purple are the Cox 5 game of the week, marking the first time the EPHS girls’ program will be broadcast on live television.

Tips for both home games are 7 p.m.
