EAST PROVIDENCE — The City of East Providence and its fire department will conduct an enrollment period beginning July 20 and running through Aug. 28 in anticipation of conducting a training academy in the spring of 2015.
According to EPFD Chief Oscar Elmasian, the academy is being held “to fill current and future openings in the department.”
To be eligible for consideration, prospective candidates must submit the following minimum information during the open enrollment period: a completed application, a driver’s license, a copy of their safe driving record, a BCI (Bureau of Criminal Identifications/Investigations) check through the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office and a copy of their high school diploma.
If a prospect is already in possession of an Emergency Medical Technician certificate or has a current Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) certificate, those can be submitted during the open period as well.
If not, a candidate must complete a recognized EMT course by February of 2015 to remain under consideration for a position in the academy. Chief Elmasian said there are several EMT classes available through public and private organizations. Also, a prospect must complete the PPA, given by the R.I. Fire Chief’s Association, prior to being eligible to take the written exam portion of the process in November of 2014. The next PPA is set for October.
The schedule of events surrounding the East Providence Fire Department recruitment period is as follows: July 20-August 28, open enrollment; October, RIFCA Physical Performance Assessment; November, written exam; January 2015, oral interviews; TBD, psychiatric and medical evaluations; March 2015, EPFD Training Academy (tentative start date, March 2).
