EAST PROVIDENCE — At its meeting Tuesday night, Sept. 3, the East Providence City Council voted against making any additional changes to the allotted parking time on an area of Taunton Avenue near Six Corners.

The Council passed a motion to deny the resolution by a 3-2 margin. Councilmen Helder Cunha, in whose district (2) the issue arose, James Briden and Thomas Rose were in opposition to any more changes and voted for the motion. Councilmen Tracy Capobianco and Chrissy Rossi, the latter in whose name the resolution was brought to the floor, voted against the motion to deny.

At dispute is a portion of parking near Six Corners which will remain as a two-hour parking zone. Former City Councilman Brian Coogan, who is part of the family that owns nearby Horton’s Seafood, attended a recent Council meeting to lobby for passage of the proposed ordinance change from a two to six hour limit.

When the resolution to change the ordinance came to the floor Tuesday, Mr. Briden, the Council President and ceremonial mayor, interjected, saying Mr. Cunha should take the lead on the measure and not Mrs. Rossi, who represents Ward 4 in Riverside. Mrs. Rossi deferred to her colleague, who responded the issue had been previously discussed and declined.

“I’m not for six-hour parking only because there’s a bus stop there. We’ve dealt with this issue before. It’s over,” Mr. Cunha said. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to put six-hour parking near a bus stop and it would affect businesses who have already complained to me about it before.”

Great job Cuncilman Cunha standing your ground, you would think by now that Ms. Rossi would realize she does not run the entire city.
