EAST PROVIDENCE — In the same vein as inauguration night the previous evening, the newly-seated East Providence City Council held a concise, cooperative initial meeting of just about 90 minutes to begin its session Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the City Hall Chamber.

Jim Briden conducted his first meeting as new East Providence City Council president Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Among the more notable items approved by the Council, former president Bruce Rogers was named to the Carousel Commission to fill the unexpired of Marie G. Camille. Ms. Camille had requested to see her role reduced from being a full-time member of the Commission to an alternate. Mrs. Capobianco submitted Mr. Rogers’ name for consideration, Ms. Camille’s position on the commission being at-large.
The position packs little political punch, which is likely part of the reason Mr. Rogers was reappointed to the post. However, Mr. Rogers, according to members of the body, is seen by several on the Carousel Commission as an enthusiastic supporter of its mission and is a willing participant in the fundraising effort needed to help maintain the city landmark.
At the request of Public Works Director Steve Countu, the Council gave first passage to an ordinance that would make Alice Street (westbound) from Taunton Avenue to James Street a one-way road.
The Council holds its last meeting of the calender year on Tuesday night, Dec. 20, at 7:30 p.m. It also approved its slate for next year. The 2013 Council meeting schedule is as follows:
| January 8 & 22 | 7:30 p.m. | |

First time I attended a council meeting, that did not last all night long, what a pleasant surprise.
