EAST PROVIDENCE — During what is becoming the norm — a quick and concise affair rather than the often monotonous, meandering gatherings of the past — the East Providence City Council approved a number of actions at its meeting Tuesday night, Sept. 3, in the City Hall Chamber.
The Council unanimously (5-0) voted to approve claims made by four people for damage to their cars while driving on East Providence roads. Roderick Davol will receive $689.65 for damages to his vehicle suffered on Forbes Street. Irit Gambuto will get $222.28 for damage incurred while driving on Warren Avenue. Frederick Foeri had his initial claim of $1,668.65 denied by the Council but upon reconsideration the legislators agreed to compensate him $738.87 for damage his car took on Boyd Avenue.
(Updated, corrected, 8 a.m., Sept. 5) In addition, the Council voted to refer to the Trust a claim made by Geico Insurance on behalf of client Brittany Tuetken in the amount of $13,868.48 for damages suffered after being involved in an accident with an East Providence Police vehicle. In layman’s terms, the Council referred the case to the city’s insurer to further investigate the claim.
The following appointments were made by the Council Tuesday:
Carousel Commission – 3rd Alternate by Councilman Chrissy Rossi of Tony Ottone; Economic Development Commission – re-appointment by Councilman James Briden of James Hammond; Economic Development Commission – re-appointment by Councilman Briden of Jonathan Killian; Carousel Commission – re-appointment by Councilman Thomas Rose of Luci Stoddard; and Carousel Commission – re-appointment by Councilman Rose of Mildred Morris.
The Council unanimously gave initial passage of a request to post a new stop sign on Gerald Street (northbound and southbound traffic) at its intersection with Robinson Street near the Silver Spring School and playground.
Also, the Council gave its first full consent to an ordinance clarifying the procedures used to hold and disperse money donated to funding middle schools sports by residents on their property tax forms. Finance Director Malcolm Moore told the Council all requests must go through the office of the Superintendent for approval. In addition, the money donated will not affect the School Department’s Maintenance of Effort requirements.
East Providence Prevention Coalition coordinator Jenn Wall told the Council for the first time in her decade-long stay in the position no business in the city was charged with serving alcohol to underage patrons during the most recent sting operation conducted by the group along with the EPPD.
The sting took place during the month of July and encompassed some 23 establishments with licenses to serve alcohol. Ms. Wall noted that total was roughly a quarter of all businesses in East Providence with beverage licenses.
During Council privilege, Councilman Rose asked Public Works Director Steve Coutu and City Manager Peter Graczykowski to contact National Grid about uncapped street lights that may or may not be costing the taxpayers money. Grid was supposed to cap nearly a third of the city’s street lights in a cost-saving measure over the last year. Councilman Rose believes some that should not may still be in service.
Councilman Rose also thanks all those who viewed and participated in the second annual East Providence Labor Day Parade, Sept. 2. He said plans are already in the works to more aggressively fund raise to improve the experience of attendees both at the start and end of the parade in the future.
Councilman Helder Cunha questioned Mr. Coutu about the street sweeping schedule, calling both the lack of sweeping his ward (2) and both the lack of weed control on city and private lots “unacceptable.” Mr. Cunha said it was incumbent upon the Council to initiate a discussion on the subject rather than wait for complaints from constituents.
Councilman Rossi used her privilege to announce a series of upcoming community events, including the Crescent Park Carousel Preservation Association in collaboration with Anna Gasbarro present the second annual Food and Wine Pairing with Silent Auction to take place at the Looff Carousel Thursday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Carousel is located at 700 Bullocks Point Ave. Tickets are $30 for individuals or $50 for a pair.
