Demolition of the indoor pool at the Bayside Family YMCA began late last week, marking the beginning to a significant renovation project at the West Street facility.

New England Construction is serving as construction manager for the project, which was designed by Vision 3 Architects of Providence. The work encompasses renovation to more than 36,000 square feet of space and the addition of a new 24,430 square-foot aquatics center with a six-lane in-ground pool, as well as a shallow swimming pool for families.

A new member-friendly reception and front desk area, all new locker rooms and significant improvements to the gym, fitness and wellness center are also planned. To meet increasing demand for services, several enhancements to ensure handicap accessibility, including the addition of a new elevator, will be completed.

“New England Construction is excited to be part of this project for the YMCA of Greater Providence and the local families who frequent the Bayside location,” said John Pignataro, president and COO of New England Construction. “We will continue to support this project with careful planning, phased execution and consistent communications. A commitment to the safety of the membership will be paramount as construction will be on-going while the facility is operational.”

During construction, Bayside aquatic staff will be offering comparable programs at various other branches. Members can swim at other YMCA branches, including the East Side of Providence and the Newman Y in Seekonk.
