WESTPORT — Construction crews were grading the road surface over the new Sam Tripp Brook bridge Saturday in preparation for paving.
With concrete side walls in place and large new aluminum culvert now carrying the brook, the $228,000 project is nearing itsconclusion.
That means motorists will again be able to drive the length of Drift Road for the first time since it was closed just south of Hixridge Road for the bridge job nearly two months ago.
Workers said they are re-using many of the massive cut stones that provided the sides and foundation for the old bridge. The much smaller culvert beneath the older bridge was damaged and partially blocked by flood water in March of 2010.
