After 25 years of teaching in the Bristol Warren School District, Kristen Aleicho of Portsmouth seems to learn as much from the 5-year-olds in her kindergarten class as they do from her.
“Five-year-olds are the funniest people,” she said of the antics and comments she experiences each day.
On Monday, the Bristol Warren Regional School Committee recognized her as the district’s Teacher of the Year, an acknowledgment that not only her students appreciate her dedication and hard work.
On June 10, Ms. Aleicho attended the end-of-the-year school committee meeting where retirees and one teacher from each of the district’s six schools were recognized as teachers of the year. After receiving the teacher of the year award for Colt Andrews, she was also named teacher of the year for the Bristol Warren district.
“It’s a really nice honor to be recognized by your peers,” Ms. Aleicho said the day after receiving the award.
The recognition was well deserved, said Colt Andrews Principal Patrick Lattuca.
“Every time I go into her classroom, the kids are engaged in the task at hand,” Mr. Lattuca said. “Kindergarten is one of the most important years in establishing the foundation” of education.
Mr. Lattuca described Ms. Aleicho as an “educator and nurturer.”
“I feel lucky to have her in this school,” he said.
While the name on the award recognized Ms. Aleicho for her work, she credited those around her for working as a team. Still, the children keep her motivated and looking forward to work each day.
“They’re not always easy to work with,” she said of the 25 five-year-olds with boundless energy. “But they learn so much in a year.”
