Nayatt School needs help — volunteers are needed to prep and assemble new playground equipment next weekend, May 24 and 25.
A small group of volunteers is helping plan the work. On Friday, May 24, about 40 people are needed to unpack the new playground equipment and place it in the existing playground area behind the school. More volunteers — more than 60, if possible — are needed to install the new equipment. The work will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days.
“Volunteers are asked to come early and stay as long as they can so the playground designer does not need to retrain people throughout the day,” stated a recent e-mail. “If you can only come in the afternoon, that is OK too! We welcome all help!”
Those organizing the event will provide breakfast and lunch, and are “working on getting baby-sitters and activities for kids if parents have to bring the kids. However, given that this is a construction site, this is not a kid-friendly event.”
Volunteers should wear work boots and other appropriate clothing; anyone 16 or older can participate.
As of Thursday afternoon, May 9, organizers had recruited eight volunteers to help with the project.
Some supplies are also needed for the project, including 10 deep wheelbarrows and the use of a flat-bed tow truck. The truck will be needed for a one-hour time period on Thursday, May 23 during the unloading process of playground equipment.
Part of the project is to install a new outdoor classroom structure at Nayatt. The Nayatt School community plans to honor the late school employee, Emma Ferreira, through the project. There will also be a fund-raiser on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at the Hampden Meadows Volunteer Fire Company at 166 Sowams Road. Tickets to the event are $10 and can be purchased by calling 252-1136.
