One of the oldest businesses in town is on the market.
Phil Judge Florist, of Primrose Hill Road, has been up for sale since February. The business has been around for more than 60 years. It has always been owned and operated by the Judge family.
“I’m ready to do this. I’m ready to retire,” said Helen Judge, who now runs the store.
Ms. Judge said her parents bought the property in 1949. They built a few greenhouses before opening up the shop in the mid 1960s.
Ms. Judge has worked at the store the entire time though recently, she’s been working by herself while less and less customers seem to be coming through the door.
“Business has slowed down quite a bit the last three or four years,” Ms. Judge said.
“People are just buying less flowers.”
A Century 21 sign now sits in front of the floral shop; Ms. Judge said there hasn’t been much interest from potential buyers. Ms. Judge said she hopes the shop remains a florist but that isn’t a certainty. She also said it’s unknown exactly how long Phil Judge will stay open.
“We really don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said.
Regulars, meanwhile, aren’t taking any chances on a few final visits. Ms. Judge said they’ve frequently stopped in over the last several weeks. The shop is also likely facing at least one final rush with Mother’s Day just around the corner.
“A lot of them say they’re going to miss us,” Ms. Judge said.
“But it’s something that has to be done.”
