Custom House Coffee is now ‘Portsmouth Publick House’

custom house coffeePORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Custom House Coffee at Clock Tower Square, West Main Road, has been renamed Portsmouth Publick House to better reflect its expanded focus on food.

While you can still stop in for a quick coffee or cappuccino early in the morning, now you can linger at a table for dinner with a glass of wine, a pint of pale ale or an espresso martini.

“From the day the Portsmouth location opened in 2006, customers have been asking for more food offerings and longer hours. We finally decided to go with the flow and become a full-service restaurant with a new name,” said George Doumaney, co-owner of the business.

The new identity will help end the confusion customers have experienced between the two Custom House Coffee locations as the food offerings have become more divergent, the owners say.

The original Middletown Custom House Coffee location will stay the same, keeping its focus on coffee while roasting for dozens of wholesale customers, including Portsmouth Publick House. The Middletown store’s food offerings will continue to be mostly pre-prepared, quick-service fare.

The owner and founder of Custom House Coffee, Robert Mastin, agrees that the name change is in everyone’s best interests.

“Different names will mean customers won’t have the same expectations for both stores — no disappointment when they can’t get the exact same menu item at both locations,” said Mr. Mastin. “And there’s no downside because Portsmouth Publick House will continue to serve the best coffee in Portsmouth.”

Portsmouth Publick House will be open until 10 p.m. every night, serving full breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some minor changes have been made to the layout to better differentiate the separate grab-and-go area from the table service area that will be served by traditional wait staff.
