Veterans remembered on Veterans Day
The Bristol Veterans Council is hosting a full slate of ceremonies on Veterans Day – Monday, Nov. 11.
The day will start at 8:30 a.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony in the War Garden on Hope Street.
An interfaith service will follow at 9:30 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home on Metacom Avenue.
Then, at 11, a ceremony honoring all military veterans past and present, will take place under a heated tent at the Vets Home.
In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.
Armistice Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, which ended World War I. It went into effect on the eleventh day, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh month.
