On Saturday, August 18, 2012 Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum held its biennial gala. The evening honored Terry and Lincoln Mossop, of East Greenwich, and Janice and Dudley Williams, of Bristol, for their generous support of Blithewold and many other Rhode Island charitable organizations.“The event co-chairs, Noreen Ackerman of Warren and Joe Brito Jr. and Mary Catharine Miller of Bristol, created a truly magical evening for our three hundred and seventy guests,” said Karen Binder, executive director of Blithewold.

The theme for the event was “A Yachtsmen’s Ball…Celebrating Summers by the Bay,” and featured an actor dressed as a bronzed ship’s captain to greet the guests.

The gourmet dinner, dance and live and silent auctions helped to raise over $170,000, a record for the organization, said Ms. Binder.

Items including trips, sporting packages, dinners, and fashion and home accessories generated over $45,000. Louis Raymond, garden designer and owner of Renaissance Gardening, served as the master of ceremonies. Dinner was followed by an evening of dancing under the stars to the swinging sounds of Decades by Dezyne, a Boston based ten-piece band.

“I sincerely appreciate the record breaking support for the “Yachtsmen’s Ball.” We plan to utilize a portion of the proceeds to implement several elements of Blithewold’s recently completed Master Plan,” Ms. Binder said.

Major sponsors of the event included Sylvan Nursery, The Van Sloun Foundation, Bristol Marine, Edwards Wildman Palmer, LLP, U.S. Trust/Bank of America Private Wealth Management, Washington Trust, Bank Newport, Capital City Financial Corp, Citizens Bank, Fisher/Unitech, Yard Works, and Van Liew Trust Co.
