BOSTON — Two runners with locals ties were winners while East Providence High School’s Chris Moura led the Rhode Island contingent in his event during the 26th annual New England Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday, March 2.
St. Mary Academy-Bay View senior Erica Johnson put an exclamation point on her outstanding career competing in the region as the four-time state champion in the girls’ 600 meters added a New England title Saturday with a winning time of 1:33.37.
Johnson, who placed second in the regional meet last year, was 19 1/100th of a second in front of second-place finisher Amy Piccolo, of Massachusetts.
Of note as well, Classical’s Maddy Berkson, a product of the Gordon School in East Providence, won the girls’ 1,000-meter title for a second winter in a row as the junior set a new meet record with a time of 2:49.32.
As for Moura, after a disappointing foul cost him a chance at the state title two weeks ago, the East Providence senior rallied to defeat his nearest local rivals while placing fifth overall in the boys’ long jump Saturday. Moura’s best attempt at New Englands was 21 feet, 7 inches. Alex Niemiec, of Massachusetts, won the event and set a new meet record in the process with a distance of 23’10.”
The EPHS girls’ team was represented by its 4×200 relay group of Sierra Cunningham, Tayla Carnevale, Racheal Finn and Kaitlyn Bellamy, the quartet winning its heat and finishing 19th overall in 1:50.03.
