The top two teams in Division 1 Central, the Barrington Eagles (4-0) and the St. Mary Bay View Bengals (3-0) squared off at Barrington High School on Friday, Jan. 17, where the girls from Bay View outgunned the Lady Eagles for a 65-57 win.
The Eagles took an early lead with both teams playing a physical game, creating turnovers and blocking shots. With two minutes left in the first half, Bay View made back-to-back baskets by stealing an Eagles’ after point throw in to take a 15-13 lead and never looked back.
“We made a lot of mental mistakes,” said Eagles’ head coach, Stephen Lenz. “They broke up a lot of plays and we missed a lot of open lay ups.”
Barrington’s Maura Kelty and Bay View’s Raquel Pederzani ran the court scoring 18 and 17 points respectively for their team.
Gracie Restituyo had a 14 point game, but their efforts were not enough to keep the Bengals’ second high scorer, Dyamond Azakpo, with her 15 points from helping seal the win.
“It was a good win,” said Bay View head coach, Doug Haynes. “Tonight we suffered on rebounding. We got a little out of our game.”
Bay View’s undefeated record climbed to 4-0, while the Eagles took their first season loss putting them at 4-1.
