A strong nor-easter will drop a lot of snow on Barrington this weekend and while the town hasn’t instituted a specific parking ban for the storm, a set of winter parking regulations are in place.

A town ordinance prohibits all on-street parking from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., December through March.

The ordinance also states vehicles are not to be parked on roadways once at least one inch of snow has fallen and cannot be parked back on streets until 12 hours after snow has stopped falling.

Both the police chief an DPW director have the authority to tow any cars in violation of the ordinance, which reads as follows:

A. No person being the owner, operator or person in control of any motor vehicle

shall, between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. of the following day,

during the period from December 1 of each year to March 31 of the following

year, park or permit his motor vehicle to be parked on any public street, not

including state highways, in the Town of Barrington.

B. Parking during snowstorms. No person being the owner, operator or person in

control of any motor vehicle shall park or permit his motor vehicle to be

parked on any public street, not including state highways, in the Town of

Barrington during any snowstorm after a snowfall of one inch has occurred

and for a period of 12 hours after a snowfall of at least one inch has occurred.

C. Removal of vehicles; payment of charges. The Police Chief and the Director of

Public Works are each empowered and may summarily cause to be removed

from the streets of the Town any motor vehicle parked in violation of this

section when the presence of such a motor vehicle interferes with the orderly

removal of snow or ice from the streets. Before any motor vehicle which has

been removed pursuant to this section shall be released to the owner thereof,

the owner shall pay all garage charges according to the Public Utilities

Commission’s Rules and Regulations.
