Mr. Costa, a Republican, said he knew he did not have the votes needed to defeat Rep. Malik, a Democrat. He congratulated the Warren resident on the victory and struggled to find a clear reason for the outcome.
“I thought the turnout would be higher,” Mr. Costa said. He added that he was still pleased that he was able to top the incumbent at both Barrington voting polls in District 67. Mr. Costa said Rep. Malik carried a decisive edge in Warren.
“This is not just a Barrington district. This is a Barrington and Warren district,” he said.
Rep. Malik won 56 percent of the votes cast in the two towns.
