Incumbent Democrats Kate Weymouth and June Speakman were the top vote-getters in the race for Barrington Town Council Tuesday night.

Ms. Weymouth and Ms. Speakman, who ran as a team, were the only two town council candidates to top 4,000 votes.

The third and final town council spot appeared to be going to Ann Strong – also a Democrat – though absentee ballots had not yet been counted Tuesday evening.

If Ms. Strong’s standing holds, the council race will be a clean sweep for Democrats, with Republican challengers Don Nessing, Margaret Kane and Shirley Applegate-Lockridge unable to secure a single seat. Ms. Kane appeared to be the top Republican candidate, about 160 votes behind Ms. Strong.

Ms. Speakman said it was gratifying and humbling to be given the support of voters once again.

“You’re always surprised when this happens,” Ms. Speakman said.

“When you serve for this long, you get a lot of criticism along the way … It’s on election night you hear from your supporters, and I am thrilled that my colleagues and I did so well.”

Ms.  Weymouth said she felt validated and honored to get another term on the council.

“I think, as June said, I feel validated that the work that we’ve put into it is recognized and appreciated,” Ms. Weymouth said.

“That’s what it’s all about.”

Ms. Strong said she was excited. She also said if the absentee ballots swing the election another way, she will be happy to continue her work on the planning board.

“I hope now I can take a seat on the town council and accomplish some of the things that I mentioned during the election.”
