A Barrington resident recently recommended that the town purchase the Sowams Nursery property — the future site of the Palmer Pointe affordable housing development.

The town solicitor reportedly urged the council to steer clear of that action, stating that it would be inappropriate for the council to interfere with a purchase and sale agreement, which the land owner, the Silveiras, and the developer, East Bay Community Development Corporation, currently have.

Apparently the resident wanted the council to buy the land in order to stop the developer from building Palmer Pointe, but council president June Speakman said that the property was not tagged to remain open space in the town’s comprehensive plan.

She added that if the town had bought the land — about 10 total acres — the property would be pulled off the tax rolls.
