Barrington Heartworks will host its fourth annual soup and chili cookoff on Saturday, offering up great food and music in support of neighbors.

Heartworks is a group of local women who get together once a month to share ideas on how to reach out to each other and the community. It’s like a book club but instead of reading, participants plan to do simple random acts of kindness in and around the community.

Amy Ames started Barrington Heartworks in May of 2007. What started with 12 friends in her living room has grown to more than 120 members. Meetings center around developing closer relationships within the group but also around performing various small acts of kindness. The organization has done everything from collecting clothing and giftcards for children in town to delivering flowers to someone experiencing a challenging medical situation. The group has also prepared and delivered meals to comfort grieving parents, husbands wives and friends, taught a woman how to drive and sponsored potential Girl Scouts.

Ms. Ames said the chili cookoff was created as a way of integrating men into the group. The cookoff will include soup and chili from 10 Barrington couples. They’re not professional chefs but rather everyday people looking to showcase their culinary prowess.

Prizes will be awarded in various categories for friendly bragging rights among participants.

This year’s cookoff will also include a performance by the band Drowne Jenny, a group of three local fathers. Ms. Ames said Grapes and Grains will provide beer and wine for the event.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Heartworks.

“The whole premise of Heartworks is to try to normalize hardship and life challenges,” Ms. Ames said.

“We all have life challenges and when we’re in a life challenge we forget this is common to our humanity. Then we feel isolated and lonely.”

Tickets for the cookoff are $25 in advance or the $30 at the door. All proceeds go towards Heartworks, a non-profit.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/616271/ or by sending a check made out to Heartworks to PO Box 292, Barrington, RI 02806.

The event will be held in the Cutler Mill Event Room (behind Tom’s Market) in Warren, 16 Cutler Street, from 7 to 11:30 p.m.
