Two cemetery headstones and their bases were spotted in the Barrington River last week near the eastern edge of the Prince’s Hill Cemetery property, sticking partially above the waves during low tide.

A harbor patrol officer contacted police about the discovery on Tuesday, July 29 — it appeared the grave markers were from nearby Prince’s Hill Cemetery and had been in the river for a short time.

A cemetery commission official said it appeared someone tossed the stones — it is etimated that the markers weigh about 100 pounds each — over the cemetery fence and down the steep decline into the river.

Officials removed the stones and are in the process of returning them to their rightful locations.

What is it with all these Barrington kids? Do they have zero values and character. Sure would be nice to catch them and give them about 500 hours of community service. Maybe dig some graves or be forced to attend the funeral services at the cemetery to share in the families grief and learn something about respect, dignity and compassion.
