Runners from the Barrington High School girls’ cross country team finished in first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth place and helped the Eagles to a lopsided win over LaSalle Academy at Colt State Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles topped the Rams, 18-41, and the Bay View Bengals, 15-49.
Barrington’s Abby Livingston won top individual honors in the race, finishing the rain-soaked course in 19:41. Abby said she and her teammates were focused more on the team’s finish — and capping a perfect dual-meet season — than on their personal race times.
Emma McMillan, a freshman runner for Barrington, finished second, while junior Julianna Portelli finished fourth, Megan Verner-Crist was fifth, Fiona Paine finished sixth, and Mary Cate Coogan finished seventh for Barrington.
“We felt pretty confident coming in here today,” said Emma, who clocked a time of 19:26. “We were going to give it our all.”
The girls team was just a few days out of a national cross country event in North Carolina — the
Great American Cross Country Festival — where they captured fourth place. Barrington was the highest placed team from Rhode Island at the meet.
Barrington coach Annmarie Marino said she was pleased with her team’s performance during the dual meet season and is now focusing on the second half of the season — the class meet, states, regionals, and, hopefully, a trip to the national championships.
“Our goal this year, our quest is to go to nationals,” said Ms. Marino, adding that only the top two teams from the regional championships are invited to nationals. “We have high aspirations.”
Boys fall to LaSalle
Senior runner Connor Royley marked one of the few highlights for the Eagles in their final dual meet of the season, as he outpaced a large pack of LaSalle runners in the boys’ race at Colt State Park on Tuesday.
Connor finished the course with a time of 17:08, and was followed by a slew of LaSalle Academy runners. LaSalle had seven of the top 10 finishers and capped a 20-39 win.
“I kind of expected this,” said Connor after the race. “They’re a really good team.”
Barrington’s Tom Barry finished seventh and Will Casazza took eighth, while Lucas Bledsoe was 15th and Marcus Sefranek finished 18th.
Barrington runners held close to LaSalle’s lead pack for most of the race, but Connor and his Ram opponents pulled away toward the end. It was a finish that Barrington coach Mike Katz had not exactly anticipated.
“I knew they were good, but I thought it would be closer. I hoped it would be closer,” he said. “We just didn’t have it today.”
The loss for Barrington was its first of the season.
