The Barrington High School boys’ basketball team lost a three-year starter when Ben Engvall transferred to Choate this year, but Eagles’ head coach Patrick Sullivan says his team may benefit from a better balanced attack.

Sullivan said Engvall was a standout for the Eagles, netting about 20 points per game and pulling down 10 rebounds. In his absence, Sullivan has seen a number of other players step up, including sophomore guard Corey Daugherty.

“He’s very good,” Sullivan said, adding that Daugherty has been out of the lineup for the first few games this season but was expected back this week. Daugherty scored 13 points and his teammate Jesse Browne dropped in 12 in the Eagles’ 59-50 win over Portsmouth on Wednesday night, Dec. 12.

Barrington lost its opener to Mt. Pleasant, 74-69, in overtime, but bounced back with a 55-47 win over East Providence and a 57-34 win over Holy Name, a school in Worcester, Mass.

Sullivan said senior guard Browne, a two-year starter for the Eagles, led the way for Barrington in the victories.

“He’s averaging 21 points per game in the last three games,” Sullivan said, referring to the games prior to the matchup against Portsmouth.

The coach said Barrington will also see key contributions from seniors Jared Silk, Jackson Foster and Matt Messore, juniors Nick Raymond, Coleman Maglio, Matt Rota and Ben Coogan, and sophomore Kevin Mannix.

Sullivan said his team can be hard to beat when they work hard on defense, take care of the ball and rebound well. In the same breath, Sullivan said Division II has a lot of evenly matched teams that could pose significant challenges night in and night out.

“Every game you’ve got to go out and play extremely well to win,” he said.

The Eagles next travel to Tiverton for game on Friday night.
