Barrington police are hoping a dark-colored gym bag may lead officials to more answers in the case of an armed abduction that occurred Monday, June 30.
According to police, a man brandishing a handgun approached a Barrington resident who was leaving his home near the town beach at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday. The suspect — possibly a Hispanic male, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dirty faded jeans and a camouflaged bandana over part of his face — ordered the resident into his car and told him to drive out of town while the suspect sat in the car holding the gun.
That’s when the gym bag surfaces.
Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said that shortly after the resident began driving the gunman away, he was ordered to pull over to the side of the road where a dark-colored gym bag rested on the ground. The car reportedly pulled near the bag, where the gunman opened a car door, reached down and picked up the bag. He carried the bag with him for the rest of the trip.
The suspect ordered the resident to drive all the way to Interstate 90 in Massachusetts; the vehicle was approaching the Mass./New York state line when the suspect told the resident to pull the car over to the side of the highway. The resident obliged, and the gunman fled into the woods bordering the highway while carrying the gun and the gym bag.
Chief LaCross said the gym bag is described as being black or navy blue and having a white Nike swoosh on the side. It is an average size gym bag.
