Three people from Maine who told police they were in town to fish for baby eels ended up getting in some hot water because of alleged drug possession instead.
At about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, May 4, a Barrington police officer spotted a car parked on South Lake Drive with three people inside. He approached the car and began questioning the occupants, who reportedly told him that they were from Maine and had driven the four hours to Barrington to fish for baby eels or “elvers.”
The baby eels, which are illegal to catch, are reportedly selling for about $2,500 per pound in places like Asia.
The three people inside the 2002 Pontiac did not have any baby eels on them, but one of the Mainers, 38-year-old Gary Wayne Beverage of Jefferson, was allegedly found to have some illegal drugs in his possession.
Officers charged Mr. Beverage with possession of a controlled substance. The other two individuals — a 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman — were not arrested.
