East Providence High School’s Jonah Aurelio won the state heavyweight wrestling title for a third year in a row.

Aurelio, the top seed in the grouping, needed to win four matches to repeat as state champ, and he did so by pin in each. Aurelio wrapped up the title with a victory over Anthony Tavares, of Exeter-West Greenwich, 39 seconds into the second period.

Aurelio was the only Townie to claim a state title, though not the only city resident to be crowned a champion. Bishop Hendricken junior Jason Davol won the 106-pound class in an all-East Providence final match against the Townies’ Collin Cardosa.

Davol, also the top seed in his class, won by decision, 8-2. Both wrestlers, finishing in the top three at their weights, advance to the New England Championship meet.

Of note as well, East Providence’s Mark Weeden (138) and Austin Baptista (160) placed sixth and fifth in their respective classes. In addition, city resident and LaSalle wrestler Derek Forand finished fourth in the 113-pound class, falling to eventual champ John Altieri of Warwick Vets in the process.

In the team competition, Davol and Hendricken won the championship with 168 points. Exeter-West Greenwich and Johnston shared second with 133.5. East Providence finished seventh with 95.5.

Next up for the top-three state finishers is the 49th Annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, at the Providence Career and Technical Center.
