Police Lt. Brian Peters said police were called to Riverside Street at about 4 a.m. Monday for a report of two males who were entering vehicles.
“An officer arrived and saw two males who were carrying a backpack,” said Lt. Peters, adding that police believe “several vehicles” had been entered.
The two men ran and police converged on the area and began a search, he said. At about 7 a.m., he said, police arrested one of the suspects: Jordan Mello, 20, of 85 Harris St., Riverside, who was carrying a backpack.
“Inside the backpack were numerous electronics, gift cards and cash,” said Lt. Peters.
Police are urging residents to check their vehicles.
“If they believe anything was taken, please report it to the Portsmouth Police Department as we may have it. We have GPS units, radar detectors, prescription medicine, change, sunglasses, flashlights, lighters — that sort of thing,” said Lt. Peters, who didn’t want to reveal too many details in order to ensure the recovered property gets to the rightful owners.
Mr. Mello was charged with one count of larceny under $1,500. “Additional charges are pending as well as the search for the second suspect,” said Lt. Peters.
Susan Dorchies of Cottage Avenue was one of the victims of the thefts. She said her car had been locked but she found scratches around the door, indicating that some type of tool had been used to break in.
“It’s really upsetting, especially when I realized my GPS was missing,” she said. But later called to say that the police had recovered it. “I just wanted to say, great work by the Portsmouth Police.”
