PORTSMOUTH — The new year brought a new hardware store to Portsmouth when Ace Hardware opened its doors in Portsmouth Plaza, 3001 East Main Road (across from Patriots Drive, the entrance to Portsmouth High School).
The store fills the space previously occupied by Harden’s Hardware which closed within the past year.
Product lines and layout are similar to Ace stores in Bristol and others in the region, said manager Mike Nutini. Most of the staff has Ace roots as well — Mr. Nutini has worked in the Bristol store, among others, as have his employees.
The store opened on Wednesday, Jan.2, and Mr. Nutini said they’ve received a warm welcome.
“People here are great,” he said. “From the first day, people who have come in have been saying, ‘This is exactly what Portsmouth needs.’ It’s a very encouraging start.’”
Mr. Nutini said that this Ace boasts an especially large tool tool section for craftsmen — power tools, wrenches, drills, the works. And an entire aisle is devoted to nuts, bolts, screws nails and related hardware.
The store has a large paint section featuring Benjamin Moore and Ace brands, as well as the latest in paint matching computers.
Unlike Bristol, there is no rental section — “not enough space,” Mr. Nutini said.
There is also a patio and outdoor section that includes grills and barbecue equipment that will be expanding when the weather warms.
Portsmouth’s Ace Hardware is open seven days a week — Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The store phone number os 683-4100.
