Angler TJ Harris was fishing for blackfish aboard Capt. Mel True’s Fishnet charter boat off Westport last week when he made an interesting catch: An Atlantic Pufferfish. The fish was caught south of Westport at Sow and Pigs Reef, and though it wasn’t puffed up when pulled aboard, it inflated itself after being handled. Mr. Harris and Capt. True took a few photos of the fish before releasing it unharmed. Atlantic puffers aren’t unheard of in southern New England waters, though they’re more common south of here. And for the record, they’re not poisonous; Pacific Pufferfish, however, can be deadly.
