Pre-Super Bowl Westport ‘Long Walk’ offered

WESTPORT — On Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, The Trustees of Reservations will host its 5th annual Long Walk, a six-mile hike that extends from the Slocum’s River in Dartmouth to the Westport River in Westport.

The extensive conservation efforts in this area by The Trustees, Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (DNRT), the Westport Land Conservation Trust (WLCT), the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, and Department of Agricultural Resources make it possible to walk from the Slocum's River to the Westport River almost entirely on protected land.

Land protection efforts continue, and this year’s route will feature a recent critical addition to this expanding greenway The Trustees, WLCT and the Department of Agricultural Resources have partnered with the Howe family to protect the 35-acre Howe Farm in Westport with an Agricultural Preservation Restriction. In addition to its several active farm fields, the scenic property also features frontage on the Westport River.

“Here's your chance to experience it all — and get a little workout before the Super Bowl,” say the Trustees.

The walk will lead from the Slocum's River Reserve to the Westport Rivers Winery. The winery will open its doors to greet hikers; wine tastings will be available for an additional charge.

The hikes starts at noon at the Slocum’s River Reserve parking lot on Horseneck Road in Dartmouth. Free transportation will be provided back to the parking lot in plenty of time to get home for kickoff.

Be aware that trails may be icy, snow covered, or muddy. Proper footwear is required. The walk is free but there is a $10 suggested donation per car to support the completion of the Greenway. For more information, directions, or to register for the walk call 508 636-4693 x13 or email kheard@ttor.org.
