Legos, movie at the Library

Legos at the Library is every Friday from now through May 18. Children of all ages can make anything they want out of the library’s Legos from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. in the Herreshoff Community Meeting Room. There have been many new donations of Legos in the last few weeks for generous patrons. Preschool and kindergarten-aged children must bring a parent. School-aged children can leave their parents home.

Free family movies are back with “Cars 2” on Saturday, Jan. 28. There is free admission, free popcorn and no registration needed. The movies begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays in the Herreshoff Community Meeting Room.

Learn to build a Facebook fan page

“Build a Facebook Fan Page in Six Easy Steps” for your business from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the East Bay Chamber of Commerce, 16 Cutler St., Suite 102, Warren. Fan pages are a great tool for interacting with past, present and future customers/clients, and also for helping you to stay top of mind.

Bring your Wi-Fi capable laptop and follow along with Stephanie Osborn of Tech Smart Friend. By the end of the class you will have a published fan page. Registration is required.

Rock the Can! 2012 is coming up next week

Rock the Can! returns with an evening of music, a free buffet, cash bar and raffles on Friday, Jan. 27, at Jacky’s Galaxie, Metacom Avenue. Bands include Band of Brothers, The Repercussions, Trinity, and Rendition.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 online at www.eastbayfoodpantry.org and at the door. $20 buys 200 pounds of food for the East Bay Food Pantry.

“Cooking for the Birds” is from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 28. This popular program is back for ages 5 and older. Create unique and tasty dishes for the birds in your backyard by becoming a bird chef. Using some of the recipes in the book “Cooking for the Birds” by Adele Porter, create fun dinners and desserts for our feathered friends. Will you make a Birdie Sundae or maybe Tweet Trail Mix? Registration is required. The fee is $5 per child ($3 member children).

Sunday Nature Flicks feature National Geographic videos on the big screen from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays in January. “Secret Yellowstone” is on Jan. 29. Discover the back country wilderness and majestic beauty of America’s first national park. Explore some of the 300 newly discovered waterfalls and learn how wolves, back after five decades of absence from Yellowstone, are helping restore the balance in the ecosystem alongside the grizzly bear and bison. It is free with center admission.

“Flying Jewels,” a photography exhibit by Rufus Abdullah, is open through the end of February at the center. The amazing hummingbird images display the beauty and maneuverability of these tiny birds and clearly show why they are referred to as flying jewels. The exhibit is free with admission.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center is located at 1401 Hope St. on the Bristol/Warren town line. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Winter concert series with Opera Providence

A winter concert series will feature performers from Opera Providence at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, 101 Ferry Road. Each month features different composers, music and superb singers, as well as dessert, wine and song. Concerts are at 7 p.m. Fridays and at 3 p.m. Sundays in the mansion’s living room.

The Opera Providence Ensemble for the first concert on Jan. 27 and 29, features “The Three Tenors,” Giovanni Formisano, Ethan Bremner and Fred Scheff, with Melissa Woolverton as pianist.

Coming up is “An Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan” on Feb. 24 and 26 and “Murder and Mayhem!” on March 30 and April 1.

Tickets are $40 per evening ($35 for members). A package of three performances is $100 for members. Space is limited, so reserve early. Reservations can be made online at www.blithewold.org. For more information, call 253-2707.

Mt. Hope Farm farmers’ market is on Saturdays

Mt. Hope Farm presents the Mt. Hope Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays all winter. Vendors in the barn at the farm at 250 Metacom Ave. sell beef, chicken, lamb, seafood, herbs, cupcakes, coffee, breads and other baked goods, granola, honey, cheese, vegetables, potatoes, onions and other produce, items made from alpaca fiber, jams, dips and condiments from Wicked Natural and more.

Devine’s Diner will be on hand this week, playing Celtic and folk music. After shopping, tour the historic Governor Bradford House and explore the farm’s 127 acres, which stretch down to the shores of Mt. Hope Bay.

At the market, they also are accepting donations of non-perishable food items for the East Bay Food Pantry.

Soup demonstration at open house Saturday

A healthy soup demonstration and open house is from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Body Magic, 580 Wood St. Chef Ricardo Costa will demonstrate several ways of making low-cost, health conscious soups.

Bristol County Elks and Merrill raffles set

Bristol County Elks Lodge 1860, in conjunction with the Merrill Lounge in East Providence, holds raffles each year to benefit many charitable causes, including the R.I. Veterans’ Home, scholarships, the East Bay Cares Program, Goodwill Industries and more.

The Elks-Merrill raffles take place every Saturday through March 17. They are open to the public and run from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Merrill Lounge is at 535 North Broadway, East Providence. Prizes include giant lobsters, choice meats, flat screen TVs and more.

‘Soup’s On’ night benefits scholarships

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Bristol Fire Department is holding a “Soup’s On” night from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Hydes Fire Station at the corner of Annawamscutt Drive and Metacom Avenue.

Enjoy several types of soup, bread, salad and dessert and take a chance on raffles for wonderful prizes.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary’s scholarship fund.

Irish singer Robbie O’Connell on Saturday

Bristol’s Stone Church Coffee House at the First Congregational Church welcomes Irish folk singer Robbie O’Connell on Saturday, Jan. 28. He has performed and recorded with the Clancy Brothers and his cousins, Aoife and Dónal Clancy. He is working on a new solo CD of his own compositions.

The coffeehouse is an affordable, family oriented, handicap-accessible musical venue. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., with the show at 7:30. Tickets are available at the door. Comedy wedding show at St. Elizabeth parish

The Santo Cristo Committee from St. Elizabeth Church is presenting an interactive comedy show and dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in the parish hall, 577 Wood St. The Out of the Gutter Comedy, The Portuguese Kids, host “Manny and Teresa’s Portuguese Wedding Ceremony Show,” with a reception immediately following.

After five years of being engaged, Manny and Teresa are finally ready to tie the knot and everyone is invited. Eat, drink and be merry with the couple as they survive the most hectic day of their lives. Pizza Tasting Faceoff to benefit girls’ hockey

The Barrington/Mt. Hope/ Portsmouth Co-op Girls Hockey Team and the Barrington Girls Hockey Association are hosting a Pizza Tasting Faceoff from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, in the Barrington High School cafeteria, Lincoln Avenue.

There will be over 15 East Bay pizza restaurants and bakeries represented, along with beverages and desserts. Sample the pizzas and vote for the Best Pizza, Best Crust and Best Cheese. In addition to voting for your favorite pizza, bid on some of the great silent auction items and take a chance on a number of raffle items.

Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family. All proceeds will support the girls hockey program. All gifts are tax-deductible. Slides, a film on building the Mt. Hope Bridge

The Bristol Historical and Preservation Society at 48 Court St. will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, for an encore presentation of “Building the Mount Hope Bridge” by Lombard John Pozzi. Mr. will give a talk, including slides from his recent presentation at Mt. Hope Farm.

If you couldn’t attend then, this is a chance to see the slide show as well as a 40-minute black and white film taken during the construction and also the dedication of the bridge. The film shows details of twisting the cables, moving the girders from downtown Bristol to the bridge, and many details of the construction.

There is a display of items relating to the bridge at the society, including the scissors used to cut the ribbon to open the bridge. The museum and the Museum Corner will be open. Light refreshments will be served.

The society also has a display from the collections of items relating to the bridge in one window and winter-related items in the other window at Nunes Insurance Agency on Hope Street. Stop by and see items from Bristol’s past.
