Valcourt mounts Westport Selectmen challenge

WESTPORT — An otherwise sleepy upcoming Westport election became more interesting late Wednesday when Brian Valcourt threw his hat into the race for Board of Selectmen.

His filing came just 15 minutes before the 4 p.m. Feb. 16 filing deadline at Town Hall.

A former selectmen who lost last April, Mr. Valcourt will run against incumbent Craig Dutra and Conservation Commission Chairman R. Michael Sullivan for the two available seats.

Mr. Valcourt has been sharply critical of selectmen actions.

Last spring he wrote, “Selectmen’s meetings of late have been charged with petty politics, bullying, and personal vendettas, all at the expense of the good citizens of Westport.”

He said the board has ignored the voters’ wishes, for instance in declining to erect the voter-approved wind turbine.

Other than ballot questions, the election otherwise looks lackluster — most available seats are uncontested, although write-ins could still show up.
