Malassada sale
Franklin Court Independent Living Activities and the Tenant Association are hosting a malassada sale on Friday, Feb. 17, at 9 a.m. in the community room, 150 Franklin St. (use the Wood Street entrance). Coffee will be available. Everyone is invited to help their fund-raising effort.
Indoor farmers’ market
The indoor farmers’ market at Mt. Hope Farm, 250 Metacom Ave., Bristol, continues Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. Vendors in the barn will include Wicked Natural Products, Maplewood Farm, The Coffee Guy, The Cupcakerie, Foxboro Cheese, The Local Catch, Aquidneck Honey, Aquidneck Farms, Provencal Bakery, Windmist Farm, Mapleville Farm, Wishing Stone Farm, The Reynolds Farm, Hill Orchards and Wholly Granola.
Italian Night
St. Mary of the Bay Parish will host an Italian Night featuring Father Gower’s homemade pasta e fagioli and homemade wine and limoncello, after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the lower church, Main Street, Warren. There also will be music by Jeff Jarvis Entertainment. On the menu are pasta e fagioli, salad, bread, dessert, complimentary wine, limoncello and soft drinks. Annual pasta dinner
St. Thomas the Apostle Church will hold its annual pasta dinner on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the church hall at 500 Metacom Ave., Warren. For tickets, call 401/245-4488 or 245-4469. Tickets are $9 for adults and $4 for children under 12. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Young kids, old recipes
Coggeshall Farm, 1 Colt Drive, Bristol, hosts “Kids in the Kitchen” from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, Feb. 21 to 24. Children and their families will learn how to cook farm-raised produce over the fire at the hearth of the 18th-century tenant farmhouse. Select produce preserved for winter storage, investigate old recipes in an 18th-century cookbook and then prepare a dish as it was done 200 years ago. For safety reasons, one adult may not accompany more than two children. The cost is $25 for adults, $17 for children 6 to 12 ($20/$15 for members). Pancake suppers
Several local churches will be hosting Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The Baptist Church in Warren, corner of Main and Miller streets, welcomes all to its supper at 6 p.m. Donations are $5 per person. The First United Methodist Church of Warren/Bristol, 25 Church St., Warren, has one at 6:30 p.m., and a goodwill offering will be accepted. The vestry of the Church of Saint John the Evangelist at Washington and Willow streets, Newport, will have a short service of psalms and prayers at 5:30 p.m. followed by the supper from 6-7 p.m.
Men Who Cook dinner
Barrington Presbyterian Church will again host its Men Who Cook community dinner on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 400 County Road, Barrington. Served are a variety of entrees, vegetables, salads and desserts. Proceeds benefit Tap-In and the East Bay Coalition for the Homeless. Chores before breakfast
Speaking of Coggeshall Farm, the living history museum continues its Breakfast in the Barnyard series from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Spend the morning getting up close and personal with the museum’s rare-breed livestock and join the costumed interpreters to help with morning chores. After chores, help cook jonnycakes on the hearth of the 1790s tenant farmhouse. Dress for a morning in the barnyard. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children ages 6 to 12 ($5/$3 for members). No reservations are required.
Cocktail competition
Newport Grand, 150 Admiral Kalbfus Road, Newport, is mixing things up this year for its annual martini contest. For the Feb. 22 event, part of the Newport Winter Festival, it’s partnering with the U.S. Bartenders Guild for a unique Smackdown Cocktail Competition sponsored by Kettle One Vodka and Nolet’s Gin. It will be an “Iron Chef”-style event where all contestants compete at the same time using a secret ingredient that’s introduced just before they begin. The winner gets $500. “Making Your Kitchen Work: Kitchen Organizing Secrets from a Professional Organizer” is from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Center Ace Hardware, 156 County Road, Barrington. The free seminar will be presented by Lisa S. Griffith of The Organized Way. Find out how to organize the kitchen tools and food supplies so you can find what you need, discover the best organizing tools and systems for the kitchen, learn how to make the kitchen a streamlined and efficient space, and save money and improve nutrition by planning and preparing meals in less time and cutting back on takeout meals. Surf & Turf Fund-raiser
Members of Rough & Ready Fire Co. Engine 5 will host their annual Surf & Turf Fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the station house, 342 Metacom Ave. The menu features baked stuffed shrimp, steak, baked potato, corn, salad, rolls and butter, desserts and assorted beverages. All food will be prepared to order and served by company members. Tickets are $22 from any company member or call Cullen McKain at 401/440-4100. The company uses much of the proceeds to support youth and charitable organizations and other community service projects.
Macaroni and meatballs
St. Mary’s Church is hosting a macaroni and meatball supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Franklin Court Independent Living Community Room, 150 Franklin St. Use the Wood Street entrance. On the menu is homemade meatballs and macaroni, salad, bread and butter, beverages, coffee and dessert. There also will be entertainment by Doug Botelho. The cost is $10 per person. Breakfast buffet
A breakfast buffet sponsored by the Portsmouth Rotary Club is from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center at 110 Bristol Ferry Road. There will be pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, juice, coffee and tea. Tickets in the office or at the door are $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10. All proceeds benefit the senior center.
