College Notes: Hawks' Lanieri earns CCC women's hoops honor

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — The Commonwealth Coast Conference recently released its list of superlatives for the Week of Feb. 6, Roger Williams' University junior Alexandria Lanieri chosen as the league's women's hoops player of the week.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Roger Williams University junior forward Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) averaged a 22.0 point, 12.0 rebound double-double in a 2-0 week for the Hawks, while dishing out 3.0 assists per game. She opened the week with a 22-point performance off 11-of-16 shooting from the floor, while snagging 11 caroms and two steals in a 66-52 road victory over Nichols. Lanieri went on to net another 22 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds in a 74-51 win against Wentworth, and was also perfect from the stripe (4-of-4). Both 22-point contests tied her season high. For the week, she shot 57% from the field (20-of-35).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Endicott College freshman forward Kayleen Whall (Foxboro, Mass.) poured in 19 points to help the Gulls overcome a tough 15-0 deficit at the start of a 67-64 win over Gordon, in which Endicott trailed by as many as 19. Whall’s inside presence helped her to the line where she was good on 11-of-13 attempts, while shooting 67% from the field (4-of-6). In the final CCC contest of the week, the rookie earned her second start of the year and gathered nine points and collected two steals to help the Gulls defeat Curry in a tightly contested 50-47 matchup. Whall averaged 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in two of Endicott’s three CCC triumphs last week.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Salve Regina University graduate student guard Ryan Birrell (Scituate, R.I.) poured in 25 points, dished out seven assists, and grabbed five boards to help the Seahawks snap second-place Wentworth’s five game winning streak in a 91-61 road victory. The win helped Salve Regina maintain a two-game lead in the standings heading into the final stretch of the regular season. Birrell added 21 points off 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 7-of-10 from the line. He averaged 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week for the Seahawks.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Curry College junior guard Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted back-to-back 30-plus point games and recorded 45% of his team’s points in the process. Jones opened the week netting 30 points, including 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line in a tight 71-70 loss to Western New England. Jones went on to record a season-high 36-point, 13-rebound double-double in a 101-86 defeat to Endicott, while making 79% from the line (11-of-14). He averaged 33.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest last week, while shooting 43% from the field (21-of-49) and 81% from the charity stripe (21-of-26).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Endicott College freshman forward Andre Makris (Southbury, Conn.) contributed in every major facet of the game en route to a 3-0 week for the Gulls as he averaged 16.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game. His best performance of the three-game stretch game came in a tight 89-83 triumph over CCC foe Eastern Nazarene, in which he recorded an 18-point 10-rebound double-double and blocked four of the Lions’ shots. Makris went onto shoot 50% from the field (7-of-14) and collected 14 points in a 70-67 win over Gordon on the road. He closed out the week with his fifth-straight double-digit performance, netting 16 points in just 20 minutes of play in a 101-86 victory over Curry. The win was Endicott’s second time reaching 100 points this season, having not reached the century mark two times in a single season since 2002-03.
