Adam Machado, who split his time growing up in Little Compton and Westport, has won the 2012 Grammy for Best Album notes.
He was nominated for the 136-page book he wrote to accompany “Hear Me Howling! Blues, Ballads & Beyond: The Arhoolie 50th Anniversary Box Set.”
The book compiled photos, history, and biographical information on Arhoolie Records and the dozens of artists featured in the compilation.
Mr. Machado’s stepfather, Bob Sayre, was watching online with his son, Robert, and a friend, when they spotted him on the red carpet.
His acceptance speech was not part of the main telecast, but he was interviewed on the carpet (view the interview here).
“I’m pretty happy about what happened,” said Mr. Sayre, though he said he was surprised. “He was up against some pretty stiff competition.”
Mr. Machado, too, was surprised, Mr. Sayre said.
Up against Mr. Machado in the category was Neil Diamond for the notes accompanying his own album “The Bang Years 1966-1968.”
“Hear Me Howling” was also up for the Best Historical Album award, but it lost out to “Band on the Run (Paul McCartney Archive Collection - Deluxe Edition).”
But its fans, which include some hefty names in the industry, know its worth.
“Long time coming,” said legendary blues musician Taj Mahal of the album on the Arhoolie Records website. “The most exciting documentation of this great music in the last 25 years. And not only will you be able to read and see, you'll be able to hear and see, too."
