Sakonnet area activities this weekend

Saturday, Feb. 4

What: “Connections” opens at gallery Where: Donovan Gallery, 3895 Main Road, Tiverton Four Corners When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Details: This new exhibit opens Saturday and will run through March. The gallery is also open Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Closed during the week.

What: Winter lecture series Where: Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave., Newport When: 2 p.m. How much $10 museum members, $15 non-members Details: Richard E. Greenwood, deputy director of the R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, gives a presentation entitled “Out to Pasture: Colonial to Present Day Dairy Farming in Rhode Island.” A reception will follow.

What: Food drive, simulated soup kitchen, and homelessness overnight Where: Amicable Congregational Church, 3736 Main Road, Tiverton When: 6 p.m. How much Donations accepted at the door Details: Beginning at 6 p.m., the church will serve soup, salad, beverages, and desserts in the dining room. A town-wide food drive sponsored by the church will also wrap up this Sunday. Bring non-perishable foods to the church, Bank Newport’s Stone Bridge branch, Gray’s Ice Cream, St. Theresa’s Church, St. Christopher’s Church, the town hall, or public libraries. Following the dinner, members of the Amicable and Holy Trinity Youth Group and their chaperones will spend the night outdoors, using refrigerator boxes as temporary shelter. The youth seek sponsors for the overnight, with proceeds going to Crossroads Rhode Island, a daily drop-in shelter for Rhode Island’s homeless. What: Common Fence Music: The Sweetback Sisters Where: Common Fence Community Hall, 933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth When: 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show How much$23 at door, $20 advance Details: Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models.

What: Art History Lecture Where: Portsmouth Arts Guild Center for the Arts, 2679 East Main Road, Portsmouth When: 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. How much: $5 for PAG members, $10 non-members Details: The second of a three-lecture series, “The Birth of the Modern,” which examines the explosion of changes starting from the 1887 World Fair and the following period during the two world wars and their effects on art produced in the 20th century. The lecturer is editor and former gallery director Catherine Moran. Light refreshments provided. Last installment on Feb. 12.
