PORTSMOUTH — Cars full of Internal Revenue Service agents descended on The Beach House Bar & Grill Friday morning but it is unclear what they were seeking.
A witness said the 9:18 a.m. arrival was dramatic, “like something out of TV or the movies, not what you expect on sleepy Park Avenue.
“Five black cars came flying up from one direction, five from the other and then like 30 officers poured out,” the witness said. He said they were wearing bullet-proof vests and were armed.
Some ran inside The Beach House, others went around the side and into an adjoining building.
The witness said the agents were inside “for at least two hours ... and then just left,” apparently without taking anyone with them.
The Beach House owner Ken O’Brien declined to comment except to say Monday that things “business as usual” there.
Police Chief Lance Hebert said Portsmouth Police were notified shortly before the raid and were told that their help would not be needed. Chief Hebert said the IRS caller did not indicate what they were seeking and said he still has no idea what it was about.
